Hey, Friends!

Today I'm talking about the UPS delivery guy that covers our neighborhood. His high-spirited, animated presence serves as an incredibly relatable metaphor for you to bridge your outer world and your inner world.

So here we go...

Meet Our UPS Delivery Guy

The other day, I watched our UPS delivery guy drive through our neighborhood, bouncing to his loud music with an occasional howl. His energy was high, super high. I watched him hop off his truck and practically bounce like Tigger (total mom reference from Winnie the Pooh) to the neighbor's front door to deliver their package. You could see and feel that he loved his job. The enthusiasm and fun he had were contagious. Here's the thing. This is him. All. The. Time. Every time I see him.

And that day, he stopped at our house to deliver a package. I had to greet him. I watched through our door's peephole as he nearly skipped up our steps. When I opened the door, I noticed he had a healthy sweat. I shared how I noticed his enthusiasm and hope everyone finds this same level of zest in their jobs. He beamed. I mean radiated. He thanked me and bounced back to his truck, and I heard his grunts, cheers, and howls as he worked his way down our street.

I shared this story with our daughters over dinner to inspire them to find a type of work that allows them to have a similar level of excitement and enthusiasm. And before I could apply my words to his energy - one of our daughters said, "Mom, he's happy!". Yes! Yes, he is.

Invite to Bridge Your Worlds

You may ask yourself, "How does this pertain to you bridging your outer world and your inner world?" Well, I found this as the most relatable metaphor!

The external circumstances in your outer world touch the surface level. Here's how that looks. Some would see this UPS driver and think or maybe voice to someone...

  • He's just the UPS Delivery Guy.
  • He brings me the things I ordered.
  • He drives too fast or too crazy. Or his music is too loud.
  • He's a working-class man that likes his job.

Not only do all of these things have a touch of judgment or comparison - they are surface-level projections we place on him. The external level. The names and titles we give this UPS driver are projections we put on him.

Yet, what's also happening here at the same exact time is below that level. And when you look at a situation from your inner world, you find compassion and kindness. You see even more. You may see...

  • He loves his job.
  • He brings joy and fun to a routine.
  • He treats his job as a workout that he gets paid for.
  • He delivers small dreams.
  • He provides relief.
  • He makes people's wishes come true.
  • He brings people hope and happiness packaged up in a box.
  • He saves people time.

This Reminds Me

This reminded me of a few years ago when it was the first day of school. One tradition we have on the first day of school is to pull out our small chalkboard and write what grade our daughter is going into, at what school, with what teacher, and note what she wants to be when she grows up. Then we snap pics.

So. Several years ago, one of our daughters said she wanted to be a Starbucks barista when she grows up. I chuckled. And my hyperactive mind ran through all those labels, names, and identities I projected on a Starbuck barista. And yet the same things apply here. If our daughter becomes a barista - she's not just making a cup of coffee or a fancy latte - both of which are externally focused on our outer world.

Instead, she's crafting a cup of happiness personalized just for you. First, she pours just the right hot water temperature over the coffee grounds. Then she uses your choice of milk and a frother to get the right amount of foam to top your latte. And then, she adds an element of delight and creates an artistic pattern when pouring the warmed milk and foam into your cup.

And then let's flip this story to you. Let's say that while you wait for your latte, you step outside into the elements for the first time that day. You take in the sunshine. You notice the breeze. You feel the stability of the earth below you. You drift into a place of relaxation until you hear the barista call your name, which brings you back into your space. You pick up your personalized cup of happiness, hope, and delight. You feel and experience her thoughtful intention as you sip your latte made just for you.

Wrap Up

So, I welcome you to bridge your outer world and inner world. And as you draw your attention more closely to your inner world - notice what brings you tremendous joy in your work? Your job? Your life's work? How do you express and feel that joy?

And if you're not in love with your job, what part or task or hat do you wear that adds bounce to your life and makes you want to howl, sing and skip?

Thank you, Mr. UPS delivery guy, for experiencing your contagious enthusiasm and being the inspiration to look inward.
